A Thousand Thoughts

one human thinking and writing about neurodivergence, humanity, being a parent, and existential questions outside the doors of the establishment

The other side of darkness

20 February 2023

Location: somewhere on the north coast of NSW.

Last night we went and got an ice cream two minutes before the shop closed and started to walk down to the beach to eat it, but then it started raining, so we hopped in the car and drove a few places looking for somewhere nice to sit but we couldn’t see the sea anyway and everything was so dark all I could think of was murderers, so we ended up back where we started, outside the SLSC, watching the local youth breakdance with LED lights, at the very same spot the JWs had been sitting that morning. We actually are in Letterkenny Problems (and we love Glen as much as the Skids).

Tonight we tested whether we remember how to use table manners (results inconclusive) and went someplace with small and fancy food that we could never hope to prepare ourselves. It was lovely and pretty and delicious and we were distinctive in our complete lack of crushed white linen clothing and for the make of our car.

I was glad I didn’t wear my op-shopped spotty Marimekko pants because I would have blended in with the decor, and also matched with another diner wearing a dress in the same print. The horror.

Despite women in three separate couples at immediately surrounding tables doing so, I did not feed Richard anything off any piece of my cutlery, nor did I play with his face like a fidget toy. I should have taken pity on them and handed out Rubik’s cubes.

After eating lots of tasty things chosen from the items on the menu we could pronounce, and having an extensive conversation interrupted only by people wanting to do things for us, rather than by our beautiful children asking us to do things or covering us with their grubby little hands and love, we had a celebratory photo taken in front of a wall of artwork, which included a painting of boobs. 12/10
